Background of the Study

Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) have transformed business operations by enabling efficient document storage, retrieval, and sharing. EDMS adoption is associated with improved compliance, reduced costs, and enhanced productivity (Eze & Ibrahim, 2023).

In Benue State, firms are increasingly recognizing the importance of EDMS in achieving operational efficiency. However, challenges such as high implementation costs and resistance to change impede widespread adoption. This study examines the role of EDMS adoption in enhancing operational efficiency among firms in Benue State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the benefits of EDMS, many firms in Benue State are yet to adopt the technology. Challenges such as limited technical expertise, financial constraints, and inadequate infrastructure hinder adoption, leading to inefficiencies in document management and compliance risks.

This study addresses these issues by exploring the factors influencing EDMS adoption and its impact on operational efficiency.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of EDMS adoption among firms in Benue State.

2. To evaluate the impact of EDMS on operational efficiency.

3. To identify barriers to EDMS adoption and propose solutions.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of EDMS adoption among firms in Benue State?

2. How does EDMS adoption impact operational efficiency?

3. What barriers hinder EDMS adoption, and how can they be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

1. Firms in Benue State have not significantly adopted EDMS.

2. EDMS adoption does not significantly impact operational efficiency.

3. Barriers to EDMS adoption have no significant solutions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on firms in Benue State, analyzing the impact of EDMS adoption on operational efficiency. Limitations include differences in firm sizes and industries and challenges in obtaining data on document management practices.

Definitions of Terms

• Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS): Software systems designed to manage digital documents.
